Overview

In October 2020, during the nationwide END SARS protests, hoodlums vandalised and set fire to a broadcasting facility in Lagos. The main studio building, broadcasting equipment and other assets suffered catastrophic damage.

Our approach

Our team carried out a full site investigation, documented damage to the studio building, equipment and other assets, and reviewed the insured's asset registers line by line against what we found on site.

Findings

The structural integrity of the building was compromised, with 44.8% of structural members assessed as "poor". We also identified a significant number of salvageable items that had been included in the claim as total losses.

Outcome

We adjusted the claim from ₦2.79 billion to ₦1.95 billion, ensuring fair compensation for the insured while protecting the insurer's interests.

Key takeaway

On large property losses, a disciplined reconciliation of asset registers against site evidence, together with proper salvage identification, makes a material difference to the final figure.
